Oil Industry Associations and Publications

Oil industry professionals can benefit from joining oil associations in order to network with peers and to improve future career opportunities. They can also read oil industry publications to stay current on new technologies, worldwide operations, and the effects of new regulations. Some examples of industry associations and publications follow.

The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) Web site states, “Today, IPAA represents the thousands of independent oil and natural gas producers and service companies across the United States. Independent producers develop 90 percent of domestic oil and gas wells, produce 68 percent of domestic oil, and produce 82 percent of domestic natural gas. A recent analysis has shown that independent producers are investing 150 percent of their domestic cash flow back into domestic oil and natural gas development—borrowing funds to enhance their already aggressive efforts to find and produce more energy.

IPAA is a national trade association headquartered in Washington, D.C. It serves as an informed voice for the exploration and production segment of the industry, and advocates its members’ views before the U.S. Congress, the Administration, and federal agencies. IPAA provides economic and statistical information about the domestic exploration and production industry. IPAA also develops investment symposia and other opportunities for its members.”

The American Petroleum Institute (API) Web site states, “API's mission is to influence public policy in support of a strong, viable U.S. oil and natural gas industry essential to meet the energy needs of consumers in an efficient, environmentally responsible manner. As the U.S. oil and natural gas industry’s primary trade association, API:

  • Engages in federal and state legislative and regulatory advocacy that is based on scientific research; technical legal and economic analysis; and public issues communication.
  • Provides an industry forum to develop consensus policies and collective action on issues impacting its members
  • Works collaboratively with all industry oil and gas associations, and other organizations, to enhance industry unity and effectiveness in its advocacy.
API also provides the opportunity for standards development, technical cooperation and other activities to improve the industry’s competitiveness through sponsorship of self-supporting programs.”

API has a catalog available for downloading that lists industry publications intended to help users “improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations, comply with legislative and regulatory requirements and safeguard health, ensure safety and protect the environment.”

These publications are highly valuable resources. The Oil & Gas Journal provides both print media and online information concerning many aspects of the oil and gas industry. For example, there are sections on exploration and development, drilling and production, processing, transportation, research and development, and current general interest stories. The same publisher also produces Offshore Magazine, Oil & Gas Financial Journal, and Oil, Gas & Petrochem Equipment, which are available in electronic and print media.

Gulf Publishing Company states on its Web site: “Gulf Publishing produces and distributes leading trade journals, industry research, databases, software, publications, conferences and events designed for the needs of the energy industry. Gulf Publishing Company is headquartered in Houston, Texas, and has offices throughout the globe. Our two flagship publications are Hydrocarbon Processing and World Oil.”

The Platts Web site states: “Platts is the leading global provider of energy and metals information, and the world’s foremost source of price assessments in the physical energy markets. Since 1909, Platts has enabled the markets to operate with transparency and efficiency, and helped traders, risk managers, analysts, and industry leaders make better trading and business decisions. These examples are just a small sample of the many resources available for those who want to pursue an oil career.
